Direct to Internet - The new network architecture

Traditional network topologies used the Hub and Spoke model where the branch offices used to be connected to a central location or regional hub locations over VPN and internet breakouts were restricted to such central or regional locations. This model allowed these central or regional locations maximum control in monitoring, securing and managing communications between the internal and external networks, even if it meant internet bound traffic had to be backhauled from branch locations to these hub sites. Security and monitoring mechanisms were concentrated in these locations which were the gateways for outbound and inbound traffic to and from internet. With rapid changes and developments in the IT world, enterprises are questioning the fact whether this network architecture still delivers optimum performance and are beginning to rethink if there could be a better architecture to meet the demands of New Age IT.
