Organizations buy security service edge (SSE) solutions to secure their remote workforce. SSE is a subset of technologies found in the Zero Trust edge (ZTE) architecture (also called secure access service edge [SASE]), which also includes site connectivity (WAN and SD-WAN) technology. Today, Forrester clients ask about, and purchase solutions from, SSE providers three times more often than ZTE vendors. Standalone Zero Trust network access (ZTNA) inquiries have declined dramatically since the end of the pandemic after initially spiking as customers scrambled to replace legacy VPNs. Large vendors like Microsoft and HPE are entering the SSE space, though products from these vendors had not been in the market long enough to qualify for this evaluation.
