Cloud Performance Issues
Is the performance still right? IT departments under high pressure to perform - the CIO study "Top Challenges for CIOs in a Software-driven, Hybrid, Multi-Cloud World".
More complex tasks with hybrid clouds, rising costs and higher personnel requirements: IT managers of many entrepreneurs are currently facing major challenges. This is the result of a recent study conducted for Dynatrace by market research firm Vanson Bourne.
The study "Top Challenges for CIOs in a Software-driven, Hybrid, Multi-Cloud World" surveyed 800 CIOs worldwide. Vanson Bourne exclusively recruited IT managers from companies with more than 1000 employees from the USA (200 CIOs surveyed), Germany, Great Britain, France and China (100 each) as well as Australia, Singapore, Brazil and Mexico (50 each). According to the CIOs, this confirmed that digital transformation and increasing customer demands are making work more complex and dynamic.
More complex systems through hybrid clouds
More and more companies are turning to cloud computing, outsourcing databases and processes to networks that employees can log on to from anywhere. Hybrid clouds with a combination of their own storage and server capacities (private cloud) or those shielded from external access, as well as additional capacities and infrastructures purchased from external providers (public clouds) play a role here. In this way, sensitive company data and processes can be kept in-house, while additional capacities can be flexibly purchased as required in order not to overload the resources of the company's own data center and optimize performance.
The outsourcing of large amounts of data from local devices to the cloud, the increasing demands on software and apps, and the creation and administration of hybrid clouds are creating an ever-increasing number of encodings, links and dependencies. Even small errors in the programming code can cause great damage, but are increasingly difficult to find and fix.
Considerable image damage and financial losses feared in the event of performance problems
Even a small interruption or gap in the chain of dependencies can lead to significant performance problems, loss of revenue and damage to the company's image. This is one of the biggest concerns facing around half of the CIOs surveyed. Software, platform and infrastructure solutions from cloud providers and private clouds will very soon be used by just over 90 percent of companies, according to the participants surveyed.
The pressure on IT employees is growing noticeably. The monitoring of the configuration management database, microservices and clouds is combined with the concern that everything remains up-to-date in real time. More than 70 percent of respondents believe that this has become an almost unsolvable task. The frustration potential when developing new services while simultaneously monitoring the cloud environments is very high. Many IT teams are now reaching the limits of their capacities due to the growing time required to maintain and further develop increasingly complex systems. New IT specialists are therefore highly sought after on the job market - the need for good employees can hardly be met.
Hope for Artificial Intelligence
In order to solve the personnel capacity problems, one would have to radically rethink and rethink: Where purely human performance is not sufficient to monitor and control complex processes, a digital solution is needed. IT professionals have high expectations of artificial intelligence (AI). Around 88 percent of the study participants believe in a reorientation of processes in this respect: If the complex processes can be controlled and regulated with the help of artificial intelligence, this could not only save time and work, but also be the basis for better performance.
The challenges in this development are to program the AI in such a way that it actually relieves the system instead of slowing it down through high data traffic, that it meets the quality standards in the execution of its tasks and that data security is guaranteed - because this is often a factor in Germany's companies where uncertainty and mistrust of technology still prevail, at least outside the IT departments.
